Jeff Bamburg is a luthier – a craftsman dedicated to the art and science of building guitars. From his workshop in Salida, CO, Jeff builds beautiful, custom-made guitars by hand using a variety of wood. Self-taught, Bamburg has developed a cult following for his instruments' resonant tones and uniform action.

"I build tools for artists," said Bamburg when Airstream visited his Rocky Mountain Guitar Co. workshop in Salida.

Art and science meet in the luthier's craft

As for this particular guitar, the Shavano D-14er is named for the strong and loyal chief who led the Tabeguache band of Utes from the 1850s through the 1870s. Shavano played a prominent role as peacemaker throughout his life, and his courage and convictions saved many lives among both his people and the white settlers.

Close up of Rocky Mountain Guitar

The Shavano guitar from Rocky Mountain Guitar Co. features exquisite woodworking from master luthier Jeff Bamburg. The back and sides are constructed of Indian rosewood. The top wood is Sitka spruce – widely used for instruments due to its strength and resonance.

The headstock of the Shavano features Gotoh 510 mini tuners, known for their rock-solid tuning stability. The Lubri-Plate™ gear coating makes them smooth and precise.

Small touches – like the mother-of-pearl inlay around the Shavano's soundhole – are the product of Bamburg's attention to detail. The result: The Shavano looks as good as it sounds.
